There are many health insurance companies out there in the market offering insurance for the uninsured. Choosing the right one which suits you is extremely important and is also a hard job.

Health Insurance is very different from other insurances like home owners or car insurance, which mainly covers major accidents like car crash. It does not cover minor incidents. On the other hand, health insurances cover them all. It covers everything from routine checkups, vaccinations etc to serious health problems such as cardiac arrest or cancer.

In many developed countries, government provides health insurance for the uninsured citizens by financing it through taxes. Besides this, people can also get health insurance through their employers. Insurance can also be purchased individually. The plans or options available if insured through employer, the insurance plan can vary depending on the size of the company and family size. Most big companies provide more options in choosing health insurance policy to their employees than in small sized companies. Also the insurance coverage at smaller firms might be inadequate.

Buying a health insurance on your own is another option.  But your application may or may not get accepted depending on many factors such as your age and health.  If you are young and healthy and uninsured healthcare companies will most likely accept your application. On the other hand, if you are old and sick, insurance companies tend to reject your applications or accept with a price several times higher than what a normal healthy person would pay. This is because, being old and sick, you would be requiring much health care than a healthy person.

A good health insurance protects you from medical expenses you couldn't easily afford on your own. It should cover almost everything from usual doctor visits, hospitalization, serious injuries etc. Even though most of these would seem useless now, you can never say when you will be requiring them. Choosing a good health insurance plan is not an easy task. Never choose a plan which requires lower premium to be paid at the expense of major benefits. Even though it might seem economical, it is most likely to give you the opposite result, when you suffer from a serious medical condition.

Then there are those inexpensive plans, also known as "mini-meds”. These are often sold directly to customers through telemarketing or online. Such policies are available to anyone even if they are in poor health. Even though this is very much “affordable”, the catch here is that these policies are designed to cap what they'll pay out for any given illness. For e.g., the insurance plan might provide only 1000$ for a day during a hospital stay even if your hospital bill is 3-4 times more than that amount. Also in certain plans, only few doctor visits are allowed than any other plan. So it becomes increasingly important to choose the right plan for you and your family.
